
Winner of the Ana María Martínez Encouragement Award at the Eleanor McCollum Competition (Houston Grand Opera, 2025) and finalist at the Sumi Jo International Singing Competition (France, 2024), soprano Daria Lupu is an emerging presence on the international opera scene. She was awarded the "Eduard Tumagian" Prize (National Competition “Alexandru Fărcaș,” 2024) and was a semifinalist in the Voix Nouvelles Competition (Paris, 2023).
In Houston, under the baton of conductor James Gaffigan, Daria captivated audiences with her interpretation of the "Jewel Song" from Faust and the final aria from Lucrezia Borgia. Critic D.L. Groover (Houston Press) wrote: Daria Lupu’s acting chops were the best of them all… with her shining instrument in full opera diva mode.Currently, Daria Lupu continues her artistic training at the “Vecchi–Tonelli” Institute of Music in Modena, Italy as a recipient of the “Raina Kabaivanska” Scholarship, awarded by the New Bulgarian University of Sofia. Under the guidance of the renowned soprano Raina Kabaivanska, she deepens her study of vocal technique and stage interpretation within the prestigious international program Vocal Technique and Interpretation Masterclass.
In the 2024–2025 season, she made her debut as Marguerite in Gounod’s Faust at the 11th edition of the Operamania Festival, conducted by Bogdan Vodă. Other notable roles in her repertoire include Mimì (La Bohème) and La Bergère (L’enfant et les sortilèges), performed in productions of the National University of Music Bucharest and the Operamania Festival.
Daria collaborates with the Bucharest National Opera, where she is a member of the “Ludovic Spiess” Experimental Studio, having performed in productions such as Puccini Express, Vissi d’Arte, and Opera Labyrinth. She also took part in the Callas 100 Gala, under the baton of Ciprian Teodorașcu, alongside the National Radio Orchestra. Following the gala, musicologist Carmen Stoianov wrote: A rounded, articulate voice, transitioning effortlessly and with perfect diction from dramatic register to brilliance; she created believable characters, exploring different facets of first love.She has participated in international masterclasses held by renowned artists such as Ramón Vargas, Ruxandra Donose, and Leontina Văduva during the International Salbek Opera Masterclass 2024; the Canto Vocal Programs Masterclass 2023, with Liora Maurer (vocal coach/assistant conductor at the Metropolitan Opera, New York) and Sharon Mohar (stage director/interpretation coach at Les Maîtres Sonneurs, France); German and French Lied Masterclass at the Liszt Institute Bucharest, given by Daniel Fueter.
Daria Lupu holds both a Bachelor’s and a Master’s degree in Vocal Performance and Interpretative Stylistics from the National University of Music Bucharest. She has been the recipient of multiple merit and excellence scholarships awarded by National University of Music Bucharest, Union of Musicians and Performers of Romania, and the Dâmbovița Community Foundation.
